Imo State Police on Monday confirmed the beheading of the sole administrator of the state’s Ideato North Local Government Area, Chris Ohizu.
Ohizu was kidnapped on Friday along with two other people after his country house in Imoko community, Arondizuogu, was set on fire by thugs.
He was killed after his captors reportedly received 6 million naira in ransom.
Video clips of his beheading surfaced online on Sunday where his killers insisted there would be no elections in the country.
A council source said the killers posted the clips with the victim’s phone on his WhatsApp status.
“The videos were horrible. He was bound and half-naked before being beheaded. It was a painful way to die. They massacred him after collecting a ransom of 6 million naira,” the source added.
State police spokesman Henry Okoye in a statement Monday said the command had raised a team of officers to quell the suspects.
The statement said in part: “The Imo State Police Command is aware of the iniquitous and obscene video which has gone viral on social media where a man, believed to be the sole administrator kidnapped from Ideato North LGA, was seen kneeling and with his hands tied while undergoing an inhumane act. He was later killed by suspected members of the proscribed indigenous people of Biafra and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network.
The police spokesman said an investigation had begun into the abduction and murder of the victim.
He noted that the order was on the trail of the thugs before the “lewd video” surfaced on the internet.
Okoye urged the public to provide police with credible information and to report any clandestine activity or suspicious persons to the nearest police station.
